Yankee Stadium
The home of the New York Yankees! The Yankees have a long history that dates back to Baltimore at the turn of the 20th century. But it wasn’t until 1922 that the construction of the (old) Yankee Stadium began, and it was completed in just 284 days! And guess where it was built, right here, in the Bronx! After searching all over the city, including Manhattan & Queens, the owners of the Yankee’s decided on the boogie down. The old Yankee Stadium was demolished in 2008 and transformed into a public baseball field/park by 2010. A brand new one was constructed right across the street in 2009. The Yankee stadium is one of the top main attractions of New York PERIOD. It was the home of legends such as Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Derek Jeter, and much more! For decades the Yankee Stadium has dominated the boogie down as one of the top main attractions. Anyone visiting the big apple during the baseball season, can’t leave New York without visiting the Yankee Stadium right here in The Bronx.
Bronx Zoo
The perfect place to bring your children for a family day! The Bronx zoo has been a part of The Bronx since 1895. The Bronx Zoo is a must, when visiting the boogie down. It is the largest metropolitan zoo in the United States and among the largest in the world and on average, the zoo has 2.15 million visitors each year!! Also, just in case you are wondering when is the best day to visit the zoo, well Wednesdays (it’s free!). The Bronx Zoo is the home of hundreds of animals and beautiful/creative exhibitions. It is the home of many exotic animals such as the Tufted Puffin, Red Panda, Indian Gharial, and much more!
- It once housed Thylacines or Tasmanian tigers, which nearing extinction in the early 1900s, but the Bronx Zoo was able to acquire several for exhibition beginning in 1902.
- They once saved a species of toads that were once declared extinct! (The Kihansi Spray Toad) Fortunately, Tanzanian authorities had seen the situation coming and allowed the Bronx Zoo to come in and obtain 499 toads to bring back to America.
- The Bronx Zoo was recognized by Guinness World Records as having the largest displayed collection of origami elephants in the world: 78,564.
Botanical Garden
The New York Botanical Garden, and all of its beauty is located right here in the boogie down Bronx! It is THE OLDEST attraction dating back to 1891; and it is now a National Historic Landmark, as well as one of the greatest botanical gardens in the world and the largest in any city in the United States! The New York Botanical garden is one of our main attractions due to the beauty it brings to the borough. It has one of the most diverse landscapes, exotic plants and flowers, and hosts interactive programs for our community. Actually, the Garden has been teaching educators since 1917. Providing the public with initiatives such as exhibitions and educational programs that creates connections between plants and people, as well as nature and culture. And in case you were wondering… The tallest tree at NYBG is a 155-foot tall Liriodendron tulipifera which is located in the Azalea Garden and the oldest tree is a 275-year old red oak (Quercus rubra) located in the Thain Family Forest.
